My work “Making Mind Maps” is an expression of my fascination with the physical earth. I use disperse dyes which I paint onto paper and subsequently transfer the renderings onto fabric through a process called sublimation using a heat press and many layers of printing. These prints are representative images of earth from above, whether from an airplane window, a high rise or a LANSAT image. I subsequently draw “contours” on the fabric depicting land forms. Although these images are figments of my imagination, they nevertheless may evoke a memory or a representation of a place in your mind. This work is a record of Earth both literal and representational. I have training as a photogrammetrist and have drawn many contour maps for civil engineering purposes. This is the family trade. I grew up surrounded by images of aerial photographs. As a young girl I helped in the darkroom develop aerial images. As an adult, I made topographic maps from those images. I have always been fascinated with these images. As I have traveled all over the world, images from an airplane window have captured my attention and imagination. I find LANSAT images beautiful. These are recordings and representations of our beautiful planet. In this new millennium, we are confronted with the new realization that our planet is potentially in a state of emergency. As scientists research the greenhouse effect, more evidence comes to light daily of the potential catastrophic impact we are having on our earth. My art tries to capture the beauty of our planet as an homage to us, our past and also our future.
